The hotel and wedding venue are on the Kohala Coast of the
Big Island. We recommend flying into Kona International Airport as it is
only 25 minutes away from the Waikoloa resort (accessible by taxi, airport
shuttle or rental car), however there are also options to fly into Hilo Airport
which is approximately a 90 minute drive away.
There are a number of flight options:
From Australia
All flights from Australia will have a layover in Honolulu.
There are direct flights to Honolulu from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne,
however if you are not coming from a capital city, you will have a layover in
one of those mentioned.
You can book the entire route from Australia-Kona through Hawaiian
Airlines, Qantas or Virgin Australia. This is what we
would recommend as it is the easiest and quickest trip. Please note that often
the flights only run 3-4 times a week so you may need to be flexible with dates
if you would like to fly with a particular airline.
Alternatively, Jetstar flies into Honolulu, but you
would be required to book an inter-island flight separately with a domestic
airline such as Hawaiian. The disadvantage with this option is that you would
be required to pick up your bags in Honolulu and transfer them yourself.
Additionally, if your flight from Australia is delayed causing you to miss your
connection, that is not the responsibility of the airline and you would be responsible
for any additional costs to get on a new flight. For that reason, we only recommend
this if you wanted to spend a few days on the island of Oahu before heading to
the Big Island.
From the US
If you’re coming from North Carolina, the quickest option is
via US Airways/American with a layover in Phoenix or Los Angeles. This
is generally the cheapest flight and only requires one stop.
However, if you have all your frequent flyer points with
United or Delta, they have a number of options that require two stops.
If you are coming from outside North Carolina, check with
the major airline in your city. A number of cities including Atlanta, New York,
Houston, Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, DC and Los Angeles have
direct flights to Honolulu and then you can continue the journey to the Big
Island.
We find Kayak (both the US and Australian versions) to be
the best sites for price comparisons but generally try to book directly with
the airline.
